For many years now, I’ve offered mentoring to early-career writers and novelists, and I’ve found it a very rewarding experience. It’s not just about offering guidance—it’s about building a connection and sharing the highs and lows of the writing journey. There’s something special about helping other writers find their voice and gain the confidence to tell their stories.
One of my favorite parts of mentoring is watching a writer start to believe in themselves. I’ve seen so many emerging novelists struggle with self-doubt, wondering if their stories matter. Being able to offer encouragement and constructive feedback can make a big difference.
Mentoring also keeps the storytelling tradition alive. Writing is a craft that’s been passed down through generations, and helping someone navigate the challenges of storytelling, revision, and publishing makes me feel like I’m contributing to something bigger than myself.
But the best part? Mentorship is a two-way street. I always learn something from my mentees. Their fresh perspectives and creative ideas remind me why I fell in love with writing in the first place. The give-and-take of mentorship keeps my own creativity alive and constantly evolving.
In the end, mentoring writers isn’t just about improving craft—it’s about supporting dreams, building community, and giving back in a way that makes a real difference. And honestly? It’s one of the best things I’ve ever been lucky enough to do.
