HNS Bookstore Frequently Asked Questions

Are you a published author who wishes to sell your titles in the Conference Bookstore? You’ve come to the right place for information about including your title in the bookstore and participating in the optional Big Book Signing Event.

The Big Book Signing Event is an opportunity for conference attendees and the general public to visit our bookstore and have their books signed by YOU. If you wish to be a signing author, you will need to reserve a space on your registration form.

Update for International Authors

We understand that recent events involving increased scrutiny when entering the US have brought up the question of what may violate a tourist visa and require a business visa, and authors selling books on consignment may not want to bring them into the US. Some authors may choose to ship them instead, and some may decide not to sell books in the conference bookstore at all. Please reach out to our Bookstore Coordinator at kscottmejia@hotmail.com to discuss changes to your bookstore selections.

Here are answers to some common questions.

General Bookstore FAQs

Who is our bookseller?

Our bookstore this year is being operated “in-house” by HNS member and author Katherine Scott-Mejia through her company Glowing Log Books (GLB). The bookstore will be able to sell traditionally published, small press, and independently published books. Titles that are not available through standard book distributors at industry-standard discounts can be sold by consignment.

When and where will the bookstore be open?

Thursday, June 26th, 3:00 – 7:00 pm, Friday June 27th 9:00 am – 6:00 pm, and Saturday, -28th 9:00 am – 7:00 pm. The bookstore will be located in Pompeian I, adjacent to the HistFic Hub lounge and beverage station.

How many titles of mine can be included in the bookstore?

You may select up to three of your titles for inclusion in the bookstore. They can be a combination of traditionally published, small press, or independently published books, but no more than three titles can be included.

Is there a cost to carrying my books in the bookstore?

There is no cost. It’s a benefit of in-person attendance at the conference.

I’m attending virtually. How do I get books into the bookstore?

The bookstore will only carry books for in-person attendees.

What is the deadline to sign up?

The deadline to apply to have your books in the bookstore is May 10, 2025. This gives the conference enough time to compile all author data for Glowing Log Books and gives the bookstore sufficient time to order and receive books. Sign up for both the bookstore and the book signing via the conference registration form.

Traditional Published Author FAQs

I am traditionally published. How will sales of my books be handled?

Our easy-to-use registration form will enable you to list up to three currently available titles you would like to include in the bookstore.

How do I let the bookstore know how many of each of my traditionally-published title(s) I want them to order?

Please note that Glowing Log Books retains the right to determine how many copies of each title will be carried in the bookstore, based on their evaluation of sales history, local market trends, and other factors. The HNS conference will not make special requests for additional copies to be carried of individual titles. Titles must be available through typical distributors, such as Ingram or Penguin RandomHouse. If you wish to bring your own copies to the conference, select the “Consignment” option on the form so that Glowing Log Books does not order your books.

Consignment Author FAQs

I am independently or self-published. Can I sell books at the conference?

Yes, you can sell your independently published books in the conference bookstore in one of two ways. If your title is available on Ingram using industry standard terms of at least a 40% discount and marked as returnable, it will be ordered by Glowing Log Books and carried in the bookstore. If it is not available on Ingram or doesn’t have standard discount and returnable status, you can complete a consignment agreement with Glowing Log Books during registration and sell your books that way.

What are the terms of the consignment agreement?

Go to the bottom of this FAQ list to see the terms and conditions of the bookstore consignment agreement.

How do I get my consignment books to the conference?

You have the choice of bringing them with you or shipping them, at your expense, directly to Caesars. We recommend bringing them with you and dropping them off at the conference bookstore on Thursday, June 26th, between 1:00 pm and 6:00 pm.

If you prefer to ship them, please refer to this website for the shipping address, receiving rates, and other information. If you ship them to Caesars, you are responsible for receiving and storage fees and you are still responsible for collecting the books and bringing them to the conference bookstore.

How many copies of my titles should I bring or ship?

You may bring or ship up to ten (10) of your most current title and up to five (5) each of two other titles of your choice. Please remember that you will be responsible for removing all unsold books upon completion of the conference.

What happens to any of my consignment titles that don’t sell during the signing?

Consignment authors are responsible for picking up any remaining copies at the conclusion of the conference on June 28th. The bookstore and the HNS conference will not ship leftover books nor take responsibility for donating them.

If I don’t sign up to have books in the bookstore but change my mind after the May 10th deadline, can’t I just carry my books with me and drop them off at the conference bookstore?

Sorry, no, we cannot accommodate unregistered drop-offs. There is considerable space planning that goes into arranging books for sale during the conference; as a result, the bookstore will be unable to handle last-minute additions to the list of authors.

How will I get paid for book sales as a consignment author?

Glowing Log Books will pay consignment authors 60% of the list price for the quantity of books sold. The author sets the price of the book. GLB will pay out book sales within 60 days following the conclusion of the HNS Conference.

My books are only available as ebooks. Is there an option for me at the bookstore?

Unfortunately, no, but there will be tables where you can leave bookmarks or postcards or other marketing materials for people to pick-up.

Big Book Signing Event FAQ

When is the Big Book Signing Event?

The Big Book Signing Event will occur the evening of Saturday, June 28th, 5:30-7:00 pm and will take place in Pompeian III & IV, adjacent to the bookstore and HistFic Hub.

How will authors be arranged for the book signing at the Big Book Signing event?

UPDATE: Due to several factors, the Big Book Signing Event will be arranged alphabetically by last name instead of time period.

PLEASE NOTE: SPACE IS LIMITED TO 120 AUTHORS AND REGISTRATION CLOSES ON May 10th, 2025.

As an author at the Big Book Signing Event, what should I bring?

This is your chance to interact with readers. Bring your favorite signing pen, postcards, bookmarks, small book displays, or whatever else you want, provided it fits on half of a 6-foot table. There will not be room for anything to be set up on the floor.

Will only conference attendees patronize the bookstore and Big Book Signing Event?

Absolutely not! Caesars Palace attracts many people and both the bookstore and the Big Book Signing Event will be open to the public.

Can attendees to the Big Book Signing Event bring their own books for signing?

Yes.  Attendees can bring their own books or make purchases from the bookstore.

What is the deadline to register to be a signing author at the Big Book Signing Event?

The deadline to register as a signing author is May 10th. Please note that there is a limit of 120 authors for the Big Book Signing Event, so register early!

I have another question that isn’t answered here. How can I get help?
